Good Vibrations Make For Good Sleep

Posted by: Andrew on September 12, 2012 | 6 Comments

Oftentimes, the best ideas for how to help babies sleep better come directly from Pediasleep customers. This idea was emailed to us from Mary in Florida, who uses the Running Water sound with her baby “every naptime and during the night!”

It is not uncommon for parents to find that their babies startle awake frequently during naps or the night. One reason for this is that babies - especially young ones - are inherently “twitchy” and wiggle and move around a lot when sleeping. One solution for this is swaddling or using a wearable blanket , which we discussed in earlier baby sleep tips. Another solution to this problem is using the calming sensation of vibrations.

Mary from Florida writes:

"During the first few months, our daughter startled awake within only 20 or 30 minutes of sleeping. To help her sleep longer, we took the vibrating box from her bouncy seat (many other toys also have retractable vibrating boxes as well) and laid it in her cradle. The combination of constant noise and vibration helped to extend her sleep. We used this trick for several weeks until she got better at sleeping deeply by herself."

Great idea, Mary! I’m sure that this idea will help many parents help their babies sleep better.

This is such a great idea!  I’m going on a trip next week, and have an extra bouncy seat with those vibration boxes that I’m going to take out and see if it helps her sleep.

Maybe before I go I’ll even try it at home so she can get used to it.

I wonder if it would work better to put the vibration box *on* the crib mattress or *below* it… Anyone have an idea?

@Joyce - Great!  Please let us know how it goes!

@Alissa - I think it would be better to put it below the mattress, otherwise your baby might roll over onto it and hurt themselves.  Also please remember that young babies under the age of 12 months are not supposed to have anything in the crib with them because it’s a suffocation hazard.  Let us know how it goes if you try it out!

I tried this and it seemed to work well.  I wouldn’t say that my baby instantly fell asleep, or anything like that, but she seemed soothed by the vibrations and certainly didn’t have trouble sleeping.

Perhaps the vibrating baby sleeper app for iphones could also be helpful. It works in a similar way by sending soothing and relaxing vibrations through the mattress and creating white noise…

I am sure this works well with many babies. White noise and vibrations are helpful in many situation. Babies in the womb are exposed to lots of vibration, movement and noise, yet when they are born we think they like extreme quiet and total stillness. Great idea! Thank you!
